About My Practice
Aim to Live Freely and Authentically
Are you ready to make a change?
Do you feel stuck in patterns of thought, feeling and behavior that you know may be getting in your way? Maybe you even understand on an intellectual level why you are trapped in these patterns, but the intellectual awareness doesn’t help you to change them.
Meaning ✦ Connection ✦ Authenticity
Hi, I’m Crystal Tholany MD. I aim to help individuals find relief from suffering and improve their well-being.
Over the past 15 years I have gained experience in various modalities of treatment. The clients I have worked with and the knowledge I’ve gained along the way have shaped my current therapeutic style. Some of the most fundamental concepts that influence how I work with clients include the following:
1.) A cocreated space exists between client and therapist. Both shape and are shaped by that space. In the back and forth exchange that occurs between them, words are put to experiences that perhaps never before had words. The narrative expands with increasing complexity, nuance and depth.
2.) Helping a person to nonjudgmentally feel the full range of their feelings in a way that is not overwhelming but also not overly intellectual can bring great relief. People come to understand that these feelings don’t define them. Nor will they be permanently felt.
3.) Our minds actually consist of multiple different parts, each with its own characteristic set of thoughts, feelings, accessible memories, and physiologic responses. Fostering communication between these parts enhances our well-being.
Why Choose to Work with Me?
With compassion, I aim to create a nonjudgmental and even playful space where curiosity and creativity can thrive, and a person can feel free to experience and express the full range of their thoughts and feelings. This allows for narratives to expand in nuance and complexity, for patterns to shift and for people (myself included) to evolve.
I have extensive training in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. These highly effective methods form the backbone of how I work. At the same time, my training in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry as well as my individual pursuits have exposed me to other approaches like IFS. All of this has served to enhance my versatility and skill, so that I am well equipped to meet clients where they are at in any given moment. I believe people shift between different parts of themselves in different moments. It is important to be able to adjust my approach to fit the needs of whichever part is before me at any given time.
